How to add a Serial DCE connection.
Method 1: If you are using a Cisco 1941 Router (most common)
Step 1: Add two routers
Open Packet Tracer.
Go to Network Devices → Routers.
Drag 2 Cisco 1941 routers onto the workspace.
Step 2: Turn off each router
Click the first router.
Click the Physical tab.
On the left, you'll see the router hardware.
Click the power switch (bottom-left) to turn it Off.
Step 3: Install a serial module
On the left side, you'll see available modules.
Look for:
HWIC-2T
Drag HWIC-2T into one of the empty slots on the router.
Repeat the same process for the second router.
Step 4: Turn the routers back on
Click the power switch again to turn each router On.
Now close the router window.
Step 5: Connect the routers
Click the Connections tool (⚡ lightning bolt) at the bottom.
Select Serial DCE (the cable with a small clock icon).
Click the first router.
Select Serial0/0/0.
Click the second router.
Select Serial0/0/0.
The routers are now connected.
Step 6: Configure the DCE router
Open the CLI of one router:
enable
configure terminal
interface serial0/0/0
clock rate 64000
no shutdown
Configure the other router:
enable
configure terminal
interface serial0/0/0
no shutdown
How do I know which router is DCE?
After connecting:
Open the router CLI.
Type:
show controllers serial 0/0/0
If you see:
DCE V.35
then that router is the DCE end, and only that router should have the clock rate command.
If you cannot find the HWIC-2T module
Tell me:
Which router model are you using? (For example: 1941, 1841, 2811, 2911, etc.)
Which version of Cisco Packet Tracer are you using?
Or send me a screenshot of the Physical tab after clicking your router, and I'll point out exactly where to click.
